Can an online benzodiazepine survey estimate how often symptoms persist after stopping?
People who report persistent symptoms can help researchers identify what to study. To estimate how common those symptoms are, researchers also need to know how the sample represents the population of people who took the medication.
Who answered the survey
A secondary analysis used responses from 1,207 participants recruited through websites and social media, including sites related to benzodiazepines and mental health. Participants reported symptoms and their duration. Anxiety and difficulty sleeping were among the frequently reported symptoms, and some respondents reported them long after discontinuation.
How to use the reports in a case review
The study describes experiences in a self-selected sample. The denominator is the people who answered the survey. People with difficult experiences may have been particularly motivated to respond. When evaluating an individual timeline, document the original reason for prescribing, the timing of changes in dose, when each symptom began, and whether it was observed or self-reported. The survey can help identify questions to ask about duration, while the case record addresses those questions for one person.
