Case Summary

Defendant Shante Chappell fatally struck Christopher Prewitt on April 6, 2014, while he was jogging on Victoria Avenue in Ventura in anticipation of the Mountains 2 Beach marathon. Prior to the crash, Ms. Chappell admitted to using half a Xanax and using marijuana. The criminal allegation against her was gross vehicular manslaughter while inebriated. Ten days post-collision, she submitted a guilty plea and was sentenced to prison. The wrongful death case was filed against Ms. Chappell in October 2015 by Mr. Prewitt’s wife and little daughter. The complaint claimed both compensatory and punitive damages. In the civil litigation, Ms. Chappell acknowledged her involvement.

Before the lawsuit was filed, Ms. Chappell offered $15,000, the maximum amount allowed by her motor insurance coverage.

Each plaintiff demanded $1,000,000 from Ms. Chappell, for a total demand of $2,000,000. Plaintiffs requested a $225 million damages award from the jury during the trial.

Verdict: $ 20,000,000
