Negative Speech Self-Evaluations Were Ratings of Personal Appraisal
The negative self-statements scale measured how participants evaluated themselves while speaking. A lower score did not independently demonstrate better speech content, greater fluency or improved occupational performance.
The scale targeted perceived performance
The CBD study used the negative subscale of the Self-Statements during Public Speaking Scale. It asks participants to rate statements about their experience and self-evaluation. This was separate from the mood-scale anxiety factor and the physiological measures. The study reported less negative self-evaluation with CBD under the tested conditions.
Self-appraisal is a meaningful but specific outcome
Negative beliefs about performance are relevant to social anxiety. Their improvement can matter without being identical to an observer’s evaluation of the speech. The laboratory procedure involved preparing and delivering a recorded speech under standardized instructions, not demonstrating recovery across daily social or professional situations.
Keep the outcome attached to the claim
A summary can accurately report improvement in negative self-evaluation while acknowledging the small randomized patient sample and single 600 mg dose. It should not relabel that finding as an objective cognitive test, a proven improvement in public-speaking skill or evidence of long-term remission. The lack of corresponding significant between-group physiological effects remains part of the overall interpretation.
