CBD Cognition Reviews Need to Separate Reduced Anxiety From Improved Cognitive Performance
A 2024 review of randomized CBD trials discussed both anxiety and cognitive outcomes, with positive and non-significant findings across varied designs. A benefit in anxiety should not automatically be reported as a benefit in memory, attention or another cognitive function.
The endpoint determines the claim
An anxiety rating and a performance task measure different outcomes. A person may feel calmer without a demonstrated improvement on the task being tested. Conversely, a task result needs its own assessment rather than being inferred from subjective experience.
The reviewed trials were not uniform
The authors identified variation in population, formulation, dose, route, comorbidities and other medications. They also discussed underpowered studies and adherence. These differences limit a single generalized claim that CBD improves cognition across conditions.
Null results need to remain visible
The review discussed findings without significant cognitive benefit as well as encouraging results. Suggested explanations for a null result remain hypotheses unless the trial tested them. A low dose or competing exposure cannot simply be declared the reason a particular result was negative.
Interpreting the evidence
The useful reading is outcome-specific: which cognitive domain changed, against which comparator, in which population? The review identifies research potential and uncertainty. It does not establish CBD as a general cognitive enhancer or supply a dose that reliably reverses cognitive impairment.
