CBD and Survival in an ARX Epilepsy Mouse Model: What Was Actually Tested
CBD reduced seizures and extended survival in a genetic mouse model of developmental and epileptic encephalopathy type 1. The findings are preclinical evidence in a specific model, not proof of an established treatment benefit in children with the condition.
A defined genetic disease model
The researchers studied mice with an Arx repeat expansion and administered highly purified CBD by daily intraperitoneal injection at 100 mg/kg for seven days. They assessed seizures by video and a scoring matrix, then examined inflammatory and neuronal markers.
Additional experiments used electrophysiological recordings from cortical neurons. These cellular findings and the whole-animal survival outcome are different levels of evidence, even though they contribute to the same biological hypothesis.
A multi-level result requires careful language
The investigators reported lower seizure frequency and severity, longer lifespan and changes in inflammatory markers and microglial morphology. Neuronal recordings also indicated reduced excitability under the tested conditions.
The molecular results suggest possible mechanisms. A change in gene expression or electrical activity is not a direct measurement of improved cognition or development, and the study does not establish that every measured pathway is necessary for the survival effect.
What translation would require
The model concerns a particular genetic alteration, species, developmental period and treatment route. An injected mouse dose is not interchangeable with an oral human dose or an unstandardized cannabis product.
The study’s funding included GW Research UK, alongside public and charitable support. Its appropriate role is to justify further disease-specific investigation, including exposure, safety and clinical outcomes. It cannot establish a human benefit percentage, guarantee developmental recovery or determine whether a person using another cannabinoid preparation is functionally unimpaired.
