What a Mouse Memory Test Can Establish About CBD and Aging
Mirza Agha and colleagues compared oral CBD with a vehicle in aging mice and administered several behavioral tests. In a novel-object recognition task, the animals encountered familiar and unfamiliar objects. Investigators measured the proportion of exploration time devoted to the novel object.
Two comparisons can sound alike in a summary
In a one-month retention test, the CBD group’s preference was statistically distinguishable from 0.5, while the vehicle group’s preference was not. Those tests compare each group with a reference value. To establish that the groups differ from each other on that endpoint, the relevant result is a direct comparison between their scores or a model testing a treatment-by-time contrast.
How to assess a claim about memory
Look at the endpoint, group sizes, estimates and uncertainty for the comparison that matches the claim. An animal’s exploration behavior is one measure of memory under controlled conditions. A treatment claim about cognitive decline in people requires human outcomes, even when an animal result supplies a reason to investigate.
