Flattened Working-Memory Development Did Not Mean Scores Were Lower at Every Age

The youth study reported a different age-related working-memory trajectory after cannabis initiation. Its modeled groups were not uniformly separated in the same direction across all ages.

The reported pattern changed with age

The authors describe better estimated working-memory performance in the cannabis-use group at younger ages, no group difference around ages fifteen to sixteen, and a worse comparison at seventeen. Their central interpretation was that the cannabis-use group did not show the same age-related improvement as controls.

A slope and an absolute score answer different questions

A group can improve more slowly from a higher starting level without being lower throughout follow-up. Conversely, a favorable younger-age comparison does not erase a later unfavorable trajectory. The study’s age interaction needs the direction and developmental context attached, rather than being reduced to a statement that every young user performed worse at every assessment.

The pattern was observational

Measured covariates and repeated observations strengthen the analysis but do not establish the cause of each individual’s developmental course. The use indicator also reflected identified initiation history, not acute intoxication at every visit. The result supports a population-level concern about trajectories. It does not determine a particular child’s prognosis or establish irreversible decline from a single score.

Drug Cues and Self-Administration Answered Different Questions in a Cannabinoid Animal Review

A cannabinoid-like drug cue did not automatically establish that animals would self-administer the drug. Alcohol-Induced Endocannabinoid Changes Were Not Evidence of Marijuana Exposure

Changes in the endocannabinoid system can arise without administering marijuana. A 2000 review described alcohol-related changes in anandamide and CB1 signaling in preclinical models, making the distinction between endogenous signaling and external cannabis exposure essential. The review proposed an alcohol mechanism Hungund and Basavarajappa summarized evidence that chronic ethanol exposure…

A Human Laboratory Review Reported Greater Heart-Rate Increases With Cocaine and Smoked Marijuana Together

A historical review of controlled human laboratory studies reported that intravenous cocaine combined with smoked marijuana increased heart rate beyond either drug alone. That observation concerns a particular cardiovascular response and does not quantify an individual’s risk of a medical event. The administration routes matter Foltin and colleagues reviewed studies…
