Which clock matters when comparing sedation for a shoulder reduction?
The trial tracked more than one interval
A randomized emergency-department trial compared propofol with midazolam for anterior shoulder dislocation reduction. Both groups received fentanyl. The researchers timed three milestones separately: induction, awakening, and full orientation to time, location and people.
Faster awakening is a defined endpoint
The propofol group reached all three milestones sooner on average in this trial. Awakening and full orientation remain distinct endpoints. Neither time alone establishes when a patient was able to understand instructions or met the facility’s discharge criteria.
Compare timestamps that refer to the same event
For a disputed episode, align drug administration, start and completion of reduction, return of responsiveness and any recorded discharge assessment. The trial supplies group-level comparisons in 48 participants. The patient’s own record is needed to establish the sequence in an individual case.
