What a Psilocybin Memory Task Can Tell Us About Recall

A memory can feel vivid without providing an independent record of what happened. Carhart-Harris and colleagues compared responses to positive autobiographical cues under intravenous psilocybin and saline. Ten healthy participants contributed usable imaging data for the comparison.

What participants did in the scanner

Participants viewed cues to their own positive memories, closed their eyes and imagined re-experiencing the events. The researchers compared activity during the recollection period with activity during eyes-closed rest. This setup let them examine the experience of recalling a personal event and the brain signals recorded during that task.

The experiment used memories participants already identified and supplied no independent verification of their details. It therefore addresses what happens during prompted recollection under the study conditions. A claim about whether a recalled detail is factually accurate would require evidence about the original event.
