Did feeling safe to drive match the simulator results after lasmiditan?

A driver’s sense of being ready to drive and a measured change in lane control answer different questions. Pearlman and colleagues collected both types of evidence in controlled simulator studies of lasmiditan.

What volunteers reported and how they drove

At about 1.5 hours after dosing in the first study, 80.0%, 67.9% and 55.3% of volunteers in the three lasmiditan conditions said they felt safe to drive. Yet each dose condition showed worse lane-position control than placebo, measured by variation in lateral position. The percentages describe self-assessment, while the lane-position measure describes performance during the simulator task.

Why timing matters to the interpretation

The later crossover study tested two lasmiditan doses and found that the lane-position results met the study’s prespecified noninferiority criterion at eight hours. The early and later findings describe specific test conditions in healthy volunteers. They can help explain why a self-assessment alone is weak evidence of performance, while an individual event requires its own timeline, observations and other case evidence.

What Does a Similar EEG Frequency Tell Us About Midazolam and Dup15q?

Two groups can show a similar EEG frequency for different reasons. Researchers can use that resemblance to test a biological hypothesis, while an individual EEG still needs clinical context. How the study made the comparison Frohlich and colleagues compared EEG recordings from children with Dup15q syndrome with recordings from typically…

What Did a Home Remedy Add to the Investigation of an Infant’s Positive Urine Screen?

A urine screen can narrow an exposure investigation. Finding the source also requires a history of what the person received, including products that never appeared on a prescription list. What the clinical record showed In a published case, a 45-day-old infant was unusually drowsy and had pinpoint pupils. A urine…

Why Daily Drinking and Alcohol Quantity Tell Different Stories in a Medication Survey

“Drinks every day” describes frequency. A researcher trying to understand medication and alcohol exposure also needs to know how much people drank and when they took the medication. What the two surveys found A study of adults aged 60 to 79 in two German national surveys estimated that daily drinking…
