The Autism Trial’s Global Clinical Ratings Targeted Disruptive Behavior, Not Overall Autism Severity

The trial anchored its clinician global scales to behavioral difficulties. A favorable score on that outcome was not equivalent to reversal of autism or improvement in every core feature.

The same scale name can serve different targets

The investigators supplied instructions so that Clinical Global Impression severity and improvement ratings addressed disruptive behaviors. Scores indicating much or very much improvement defined a response. Separate instruments assessed social responsiveness, adaptive functioning or other baseline characteristics.

The response percentage retains that definition

The favorable first-period clinician-rated result for whole-plant extract concerned the anchored behavioral outcome. The co-primary parent-rated Home Situations Questionnaire did not significantly separate treatments. These findings should not be merged into a claim that all assessments demonstrated the same broad developmental benefit.

Name the behavior before interpreting the result

A global label can sound more comprehensive than the actual instructions given to the rater. The study did not establish normalization of diagnosis, communication, daily living or every social measure from that one score. Its clinician rating supplied a specific outcome within a mixed trial. Reporting the anchor and responder threshold helps preserve the useful observation without expanding it into an unsupported claim about the condition as a whole.
