Why Zebrafish Responded Differently to Sound and Touch After Early Cannabinoid Exposure

An animal can perform differently on two tests that both involve movement. Ahmed and colleagues exposed zebrafish embryos to THC or CBD for five hours during gastrulation, when the basic body plan develops. They later examined motor neurons, signaling at nerve–muscle junctions and larval behavior.

The stimulus mattered

The treated larvae showed fewer rapid escape responses to sound. The authors did not observe the same reduction in escape responses to touch. They also reported changes in motor neuron branching and nerve–muscle signaling. Those measures address distinct parts of development and behavior.

The sound and touch comparison makes a difference when describing the result. The study reported a change under a particular stimulus, rather than a complete loss of the ability to escape. The exposure was timed to a defined period in zebrafish development. Extending the finding to a different species, dose or exposure window would require separate evidence.
