Why More Cannabis Biomass Does Not Set Potency
Plant yield can increase even when the chemical composition changes in ways that vary by cultivar. Ahmed and colleagues examined five cannabis cultivars in an inoculation experiment that included the mycorrhizal fungus Rhizophagus irregularis and microbial suspensions.
The study measured two kinds of change
The researchers reported higher biomass in three of the five cultivars under the inoculation conditions described. They also measured 12 phytocannabinoids in mature plants and reported that concentrations varied among cultivars and were affected by inoculants. Biomass describes how much plant material was produced. Concentration describes how much of a compound was present per unit of material.
Estimating the total amount of a cannabinoid harvested would require both an appropriate measure of plant material and its measured concentration. A growth result alone cannot establish the composition of the resulting flower. Applying the findings to a different crop would also require attention to the cultivar and growing conditions.
