Does a Repeat Midazolam Dose Explain Patient Dissatisfaction?

A chart can document that a clinician gave a second dose of midazolam. That record does not explain what the patient later remembered or how satisfied they were. A retrospective third-molar extraction study evaluated these outcomes separately.

Different predictors for different outcomes

Among 124 patients receiving intravenous midazolam, 19 received additional doses and 13 were dissatisfied. In the reported multivariable models, younger age and higher dental anxiety were associated with additional dosing. Lower amnesia and higher pretreatment bispectral index were associated with dissatisfaction.

How to read an individual sedation record

Compare the timing of each dose with observations of sedation, procedure events and the patient’s account. The study’s associations came from one retrospective population and its own dosing protocol. A repeat dose does not determine how much a particular patient remembers or why they later reported dissatisfaction.
