How Patients Were Selected for the CBD Public-Speaking Trial

The CBD study selected a small, diagnostically defined group from a much larger student screening effort. Its result should not be treated as a trial of every person who feels nervous before speaking.

Screening was followed by diagnostic assessment

Researchers initially screened 2,319 undergraduates using MINI-SPIN. Further telephone assessment and diagnostic interviews narrowed eligibility. The final experiment included twenty-four treatment-naive participants with generalized social anxiety disorder and twelve healthy comparators. The patient group was divided between 600 mg CBD and placebo.

The exclusions defined the evidence

Participants had no concomitant psychiatric disorder, were not receiving medication and had very limited lifetime cannabis experience. These restrictions reduce some competing influences, but they also narrow generalization. A screening score alone was not the diagnosis, and the initial screening count was not the treatment-trial sample size.

Apply the result to the right question

The study found improvements in selected self-reported responses during a structured challenge, without corresponding significant between-group physiological differences. It did not test routine use in a broadly representative clinical population. Evidence about an individual with other diagnoses, concurrent treatment or a different cannabis history requires attention to those differences rather than silently importing the student trial’s findings.
