Early-Adolescent THC Exposure Affected Reversal Learning Without Disrupting Every Memory Measure in Rats

A rat experiment found a later deficit when an avoidance task changed its rules after early-adolescent THC exposure. Initial learning and other comparisons did not show the same pattern, so a blanket statement of general memory loss would overstate the findings.

Timing of exposure was central

Rats received daily injected THC during an early- or late-adolescent period. Researchers measured movement during exposure and later tested active place avoidance in adulthood. The task required avoiding a shock-associated location, with a reversal phase that changed the learned arrangement.

A selective adult finding

Early-exposed animals made more errors on reversal, while initial acquisition was not significantly impaired. Late-adolescent exposure did not produce significant treatment effects on that adult avoidance assessment. Locomotor responses during dosing also varied with age period and sex.

What reversal adds

Adapting to a changed contingency can draw on different processes from acquiring the original rule. A selective reversal finding therefore deserves its own interpretation rather than being substituted for all learning, recall or intellectual function. Conversely, a null acquisition result does not erase the reversal result.

Limits of translation

Only one THC dose was studied, with injected exposure rather than human cannabis consumption. Rat developmental periods and laboratory avoidance behavior are not direct equivalents of a particular teenager’s age, school performance or diagnosis. The paper supports investigating developmental timing and specific cognitive demands. It cannot establish a human prognosis or determine that cannabis caused an individual’s later difficulty.

A Five-Puff Cannabis Challenge Did Not Guarantee Identical Oral-Fluid THC Exposure

Oral-fluid cannabinoid concentrations after a five-puff smoking challenge varied with preceding oral THC treatment. Standardizing puff count did not demonstrate identical smoke deposition or absorbed dose. A Later Oral-Fluid THC Median Did Not Establish a Rebound in the Same Person

An oral-fluid cannabis study reported a slightly higher median THC concentration in a late time bin than in an earlier bin. The sampling design helps explain why that does not demonstrate a new rise within an individual. Repeated smoking with scheduled collections Eleven frequent cannabis smokers lived on a closed…

Similar Temperature Tolerance Did Not Make THC and JWH Cannabinoids Interchangeable

THC and two synthetic cannabinoids all produced tolerance to hypothermia in mice, but that shared outcome did not make their pharmacology or risk equivalent. Other effects and regional adaptations differed. A comparison of different agonists Researchers compared THC with JWH-018 and JWH-073 using telemetry and laboratory receptor assays. The acute…
