Does CBD Turn Into THC in the Stomach? What Simulated Fluid Can Establish

CBD converted into THC-related compounds in a simulated acidic gastric fluid experiment. That finding does not, on its own, establish clinically meaningful conversion in a human stomach or explain a person’s positive THC test. The experimental medium and the biological inference must remain separate.

What was in the experimental fluid

Merrick and colleagues exposed synthetic CBD to simulated gastric fluid containing 1% sodium dodecyl sulfate, a surfactant used to keep the material in solution. The experiment used controlled laboratory conditions and compared the acidic medium with a physiological buffer.

Chromatographic and mass-spectrometric analyses identified delta-9-THC and delta-8-THC among the degradation products by comparison with authentic standards. Approximately 85% of the CBD degraded after 60 minutes and more than 98% after 120 minutes under the tested acidic conditions.

The negative control narrows the conclusion

CBD in the physiological buffer did not convert to THC in the control experiment. The paper therefore demonstrates a condition-dependent chemical reaction, not an inevitable transformation whenever CBD is swallowed.

Degradation of the starting material and delivery of an active dose to a person’s circulation are also different outcomes. The experiment did not collect human blood, measure absorption, reproduce individual gastric emptying or test psychomotor performance. The amount produced in a vessel cannot simply be treated as an absorbed human THC dose.

Why the clinical extrapolation was disputed

A subsequent published commentary by Grotenhermen and colleagues challenged the clinical interpretation, citing human evidence that did not show the predicted THC-like effects or detectable THC blood concentrations after oral CBD. That commentary is a critique, not an additional experiment conducted in the original paper.

The original study was supported by Zynerba Pharmaceuticals, and several authors disclosed employment or paid consultancy with that company. Those interests belong alongside the methodological limits.

For a disputed drug result, this chemistry experiment cannot substitute for identifying the actual product, specimen matrix and confirmation method. Our analysis of oral and inhaled cannabis timing explains why direct human exposure evidence must remain distinct from a reaction demonstrated in a laboratory vessel.

Cannabis-derived oils changed behavioral and biochemical responses to aluminum exposure in zebrafish. The experiment does not establish that these oils prevent human neurological disease or provide a treatment for human aluminum poisoning.
