What Does Psychotropic Use Before a Parkinson’s Diagnosis Tell Us About Timing?
A diagnosis date is often precise in a register. The date a disease’s first symptoms appeared can be harder to establish. A Finnish study examined psychotropic medicine use across the years surrounding clinically verified Parkinson’s diagnoses.
How the study aligned the records
The researchers studied 17,379 people with Parkinson’s disease and a matched comparison cohort. Medication use was assessed in six-month windows from five years before to five years after diagnosis. Use was already more common in the Parkinson’s group before the recorded diagnosis date.
What the sequence leaves open
Earlier dispensing does not establish that a medicine caused the later diagnosis. Non-motor symptoms, other illnesses and increased contact with care can affect prescribing before a diagnosis is recorded. The register describes medication use around that date and does not establish the onset or cause of symptoms in an individual.
