What Can a Self-Selected Edible Cannabis Study Tell Us About Memory?
People who use edible cannabis for back pain may ask whether a product’s THC or CBD content makes a difference to memory. A study of 183 adults addressed part of that question by testing performance before use and again one and two hours afterward.
What the researchers observed
Participants chose their own CBD-dominant, THC-dominant, or mixed product and dose. At one hour, the CBD-dominant group performed better on working memory than the mixed group. The CBD-dominant group also showed more stable verbal-learning scores. The study found no significant effects in several other domains, including processing speed and episodic memory.
Why product choice matters
People who pick different edibles can differ in past cannabis use, expectations and the doses they take. Because the groups formed through participant choice, the comparison cannot isolate the effect of CBD or THC. It describes performance on specific tests during the two hours observed.
