Why Did Motion Relieve Rocking in a Case That Began After a Cruise?

When someone reports feeling unsteady after travel, the timing of symptoms during motion and at rest can be more informative than the word dizziness alone.

The pattern in this case

A patient described persistent rocking and swaying beginning hours after returning from a weeklong cruise. The sensation was worse while lying still and improved while traveling in a moving car. The authors considered the history and evaluation consistent with mal de débarquement syndrome.

What a useful history records

For a case review, document when travel ended, when the sensation began and whether movement changed it. Improvement while riding in a car describes the patient’s perception. It supplies no measure of driving performance. The report describes one patient and does not establish how to classify every episode of unsteadiness after travel.
