What Did Family History Add to a Case of Episodic Chin Trembling?
When an unusual movement appears in a medication history, ask when it first occurred and whether relatives have had a similar movement. The answer may change what the clinician investigates.
What the case series described
A young child had episodic involuntary chin trembling that became more noticeable when he was upset or tired. His mother had a similar condition. The report described hereditary geniospasm, involving repeated contractions of the mentalis muscle. Both were treated with local botulinum toxin injections, with improvement reported.
Why the pre-exposure history matters
The family pattern and early symptoms are evidence to consider separately from later treatment or any proposed drug exposure. The two cases cannot establish a general success rate for injections or explain every case of chin trembling. A dated symptom history and direct description of the movement can help a reviewer distinguish longstanding features from new changes.
