Can a Reaction-Time Test Resolve an Alprazolam Memory Question?

A person may perform differently on two tasks that assess different abilities. Chowdhury and colleagues tested visual memory, attention and choice reaction time after two weeks of alprazolam or placebo.

What the volunteers did

The researchers assigned 26 healthy men to daily alprazolam or placebo. Participants completed computerized tasks before treatment and again about eight hours after the last dose. The paper reported worse performance on selected visual-memory measures in the alprazolam group. The choice reaction-time measure did not show a statistically significant change.

Which inference fits the evidence?

A choice reaction-time task measures how quickly a person selects a response under test conditions. It does not directly measure visual memory. The study was small, tested several endpoints and examined one post-dose interval. Its results cannot establish how a person would perform while driving, recalling a conversation or responding at a different time after a dose.

For an individual timeline, identify the ability at issue, the observations that address it and their timing relative to the dose. A test of a different ability may add context while leaving the central question open.

Can a Computer Test Stand In for Highway Driving After a Benzodiazepine?

A computer task and a highway drive can both show a drug effect while measuring different skills. Jongen and colleagues compared them in a crossover study involving 23 healthy volunteers. What the volunteers did Participants received placebo, one of two oxazepam doses or diazepam at separate visits. They completed computerized…

Could an Outbreak Test Identify the Drug Behind One Patient’s Slow Pulse?

A laboratory can identify compounds circulating in an outbreak without establishing which one a particular patient took. Sud and colleagues reviewed 141 emergency visits for suspected synthetic cannabinoid intoxication. Some patients accounted for more than one visit. What the clinical and laboratory records showed Clinicians recorded lethargy or loss of…
