What counted as long-term sedative use in a study of Finnish caregivers?

How the researchers defined exposure

The Finnish register study followed 42,256 people who received a family caregiver allowance and 83,618 matched controls. The researchers examined reimbursed purchases of benzodiazepines and related drugs from 2012 to 2017. They classified a person as a long-term user in a given year when the register showed at least two purchases totaling 180 or more defined daily doses.

What a defined daily dose tells you

A defined daily dose is a standardized unit for comparing medication quantities. A pharmacy record can show how much medication was dispensed in those units. It generally cannot show the dose a particular patient swallowed, whether doses were skipped, or how the person felt afterward. The threshold was an operational definition for this comparison of two populations.

Reading a claim about an individual caregiver

The study found higher rates of long-term use by its definition among caregivers than among matched controls. Matching on age, sex, and municipality helps make the groups comparable on those variables. Individual cases still require the instructions on the actual prescription, dispensing dates, and any available history of use. An annual dispensing threshold is too coarse to establish use or impairment on a particular day.

Can Medical Records Predict When an Alcohol Use Disorder Will Be Diagnosed?

A first diagnosis in an electronic record tells you when the condition was documented. The underlying symptoms may have started earlier. What the study predicted Researchers tested whether information already recorded in medical charts predicted a later recorded alcohol use disorder diagnosis. They analyzed potentially relevant diagnoses, prescriptions, sick leave…

What Does a Similar EEG Frequency Tell Us About Midazolam and Dup15q?

Two groups can show a similar EEG frequency for different reasons. Researchers can use that resemblance to test a biological hypothesis, while an individual EEG still needs clinical context. How the study made the comparison Frohlich and colleagues compared EEG recordings from children with Dup15q syndrome with recordings from typically…
