CBD Epilepsy EEG Findings Differed Across Discharges, Seizure Patterns and Sleep Measures

A CBD brain review describes improvement in some EEG measures without uniform changes across the recording. Interictal discharges, ictal findings and sleep architecture represent different observations, with different response proportions.

More recordings did not mean more patients

The review describes 104 EEG assessments from 52 patients with pediatric-onset refractory epilepsy. Repeated assessments provide information over time, but they should not be described as 104 independent patients. The review reports reductions in interictal epileptiform discharges in 74% of patients, reductions in ictal findings in 46%, and changes in sleep architecture in 17%.

The categories should retain their definitions

Interictal discharges occur between seizures; ictal findings concern seizure activity captured in the recording. Sleep architecture concerns the organization of sleep. A change in one does not establish an identical change in the others. In particular, the review’s wording about sleep-architecture change does not itself establish improved sleep, and an EEG response percentage is not automatically a percentage of patients rendered seizure-free.

A second study also showed selective findings

The review summarizes another longitudinal study with reduced interictal discharge frequency but no effect on other clinical EEG measures. It reports no apparent dose dependence for those effects. These observations argue for naming the metric rather than labeling the entire EEG improved. They also do not supply a validated CBD-response prediction rule or demonstrate cognitive enhancement in healthy people. For interpretation, record the patient denominator, repeated measurements, EEG category and clinical outcomes separately. That preserves an informative physiological signal while avoiding a broader therapeutic success claim than the reported evidence supports.

Alcohol-Induced Endocannabinoid Changes Were Not Evidence of Marijuana Exposure

Changes in the endocannabinoid system can arise without administering marijuana. A 2000 review described alcohol-related changes in anandamide and CB1 signaling in preclinical models, making the distinction between endogenous signaling and external cannabis exposure essential. The review proposed an alcohol mechanism Hungund and Basavarajappa summarized evidence that chronic ethanol exposure…

A Human Laboratory Review Reported Greater Heart-Rate Increases With Cocaine and Smoked Marijuana Together

A historical review of controlled human laboratory studies reported that intravenous cocaine combined with smoked marijuana increased heart rate beyond either drug alone. That observation concerns a particular cardiovascular response and does not quantify an individual’s risk of a medical event. The administration routes matter Foltin and colleagues reviewed studies…
