Repeated THC Changed Selected Ovarian Follicle Structures in Rats Without Uniform Cellular Effects

A 1988 rat study found changes in selected follicular cell structures after THC, while nuclear volume remained unchanged. Some findings differed with the number and timing of injections, limiting a single permanent-damage interpretation.

The endpoint was microscopic structure

Researchers examined preovulatory follicles with quantitative electron microscopy after THC or vehicle administration during selected cycle stages. They measured nuclear, mitochondrial, lipid-droplet and dense-body volumes in granulosa-cell regions. These are structural measurements, not direct pregnancy or fertility outcomes.

Changes were selective within the tissue

THC reduced mitochondrial and lipid-droplet volume measures in the peripheral granulosa region. Nuclear volume did not change. Dense-body volume increased after some shorter schedules but returned to control levels after a different, longer injection sequence. The anatomical location and schedule therefore mattered.

Recovery of one feature did not prove global recovery

A control-level dense-body measurement does not establish that every follicular function normalized. Likewise, a structural difference does not by itself demonstrate irreversible infertility. The abstract does not resolve the mechanism or provide a human reproductive-risk estimate.

The study contributes a specific morphological comparison across dosing sequences. It does not establish effects of modern cannabis products on human fertility or a safe exposure threshold. Structure, endocrine function, ovulation and pregnancy are related but distinct evidence levels.

A 2021 review evaluated CBD research on reinforcing, motivational and withdrawal-related drug effects. These outcomes can inform substance-use-disorder research, but an improvement in one cannot establish successful treatment across all of them.
