CBD-Enriched Cannabis in an Autism Case Series: What Parent Reports Can Establish

Parents reported improvements in some children receiving CBD-enriched cannabis in a single-center series. The reports document perceived changes; they do not establish that the preparation caused those changes or that it treats every core feature of autism.

Separate the center’s cases from the review

The publication combines experience with 33 children and a review of other studies. Its own treatment observations should not be pooled with the reviewed literature as though all participants belonged to one controlled experiment.

The center used full-spectrum CBD preparations with THC present, and treatment durations varied. This was not a trial of isolated CBD or a blinded randomized comparison.

What changed—and what did not

Follow-up relied on clinical interviews and parents’ assessments. Reported benefits included behavioral, language, cognitive and social changes, while some families reported no daily-life improvement. Most existing medication regimens could not be reduced; an antipsychotic was stopped in one patient.

Those observations differ in meaning from a standardized performance test or an independently rated clinical endpoint. They also do not establish whether any constituent, dose adjustment or concurrent intervention produced the change.

Why an untreated comparison matters

Children’s development, other therapies, changes in routine and caregiver expectations can influence outcomes over time. Without a suitable comparison group, the study cannot separate those influences from treatment effects.

The small sample and variable follow-up also limit detection of uncommon or delayed adverse effects. A reassuring report of tolerability is not comprehensive evidence of developmental safety.

For appraisal of a cannabis-related treatment claim, specify the actual product, informant, outcome and denominator. A parent-reported improvement should be preserved accurately without turning an uncontrolled series into proof of causation.

CBD and Public-Speaking Anxiety: Subjective Improvement Was Not a Complete Physiological Response

A small randomized study found that a single CBD dose reduced some self-reported responses to a public-speaking challenge in people with social anxiety disorder. The physiological measures did not show corresponding significant between-group differences. Both findings belong in the interpretation. A specific challenge in a specific population Bergamaschi and colleagues…

Postmortem THC Ratios Are Not Universal Correction Factors

A median ratio between central and peripheral postmortem blood cannot safely be used as a fixed multiplier to reconstruct an individual’s earlier THC concentration. A human case series found substantial variation, including ratios below and above one. What was compared Holland and colleagues selected 19 adult death cases with a…

Breath THC Detection Windows Depend on Actual Collection Times

A scheduled half-hour breath sample may not actually be collected at half an hour. In a controlled cannabis-smoking study, early breath collections were delayed because other specimens were collected first. Reading nominal times as exact times would misstate the evidence. The collection sequence changed the timeline Himes and colleagues studied…
